Importances in learning
The state of mind in which you apprache study determines the results you get.
When you are learning you must establish what you are going to do with the things you learn.
Studying just to pass a test makes a person very incapable of doing anything with the subject they have studied once the exam is over. This “non-involvement” is the main barrier in actually applying materials.
In reality, there is only one reason for studying, studying for understanding, application and practice. The definition of student is “one who studies”. It is further defined as “is attentive and is a systematic observer”. A student then is one who reads in detail in order to learn and then apply. He connects what he is studying to what he will be doing.
A person can get stuck on the all importance and “everything-ness” of a subject. He becomes so nervous of terrible consequences that he will eventually have an accident. People are often educated into this attitude. It is all so important that it will kill him if he doesn’t know. This inhibits his power of chouce and ability to establish whether data is important or not. Education is usually taught by consequence, not by the fact it is a sensible thing to do.
How to establish importances in a subject
To begin with, when learning a subject just select out the unimportances. Just look at what is unimportant in that subject. At the start you may think that everthing is important, but continue to look for these unimportances and you will eventually come up with something. For example, say you are learning about driving a car. You will find the coat of paint or the colour of the seats unimportant. Continue to find something else unimportant. Keep at this, reapeating it and repeating it and eventually “allness” will start to disintegrate. You will select down to the most important controls of the car and the next thing you know he can drive a car! You will not have a craving to know anxiety and won’t be nervous at all. You are learning by de-evaluation of importance.
You wil find that a person who never selected out the importances of a subject, and who believes every datum must be memorised, you will find has a history of being punished.
